Man, sometimes we let ideas lay dormant for years. The first time we saw these guys was waaaaaay back in Book One, in the same scene in which we introduced Iosephus the Trader. The first time I saw them drawn, I was a wee bit irritated, because Will and I had agreed going in that we were not gonna have any nonhuman races. In my mind, I wanted something more Conan the Barbarian than Lord of the Rings, and I was afraid that people with pointy ears were gonna detract from the comic’s noir feel. But I thought they were cool when Will first drew them, and like I said at the time, cool trumps arbitrary rules. They posed an interesting challenge for me, but I knew I’d flesh them out more one day…and were now early in the morning on that day (metaphorically speaking).
