The Hunter Black Primer

So…we’ve noticed that we’ve been discovered by a few new people, or at least we’ve hit a new high when it comes to people liking our Facebook pages. That seems a good time to drop a little blog on how things work here, both as an introduction to the new readers and a reminder to the grizzled veterans of these pages.

Hunter Black is a hard-boiled fantasy. If Kill Bill was set in Middle-Earth and given to you in the style of Samurai Jack, you might have a good idea of what to expect. Hunter is dying, afflicted with a magical disease that he got when he was betrayed by a cabal of criminals. Now, all he’s living for is the chance to get his revenge before he succumbs. Fortunately, he has the magic sword known as The Revenger, which can extend his life for short bursts, as long as it drinks “betrayer’s blood.” Now, all he has to do is figure out who it was that did this to him.

There are two ways to read Hunter Black for free on the internet:

  • Here at the Hunter Black site, we post a new page every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This is ideal for people reading on larger screens.
  • If you prefer to read your webcomics on your phone, a new chapter, completely reformatted for small-screen reading, is posted every Wednesday at Lezhin Comics. Our postings here are currently a ways behind what we’re posting on the main site…but it’s slowly and surely catching up.

Now, suppose you are just a FAN of what we’re doing here, and you want to get deeper into what we do. There are plenty of options to dig further into what we do.

  • To stay abreast of the comic’s posting schedules, appearances, and individual projects undertaken by the creative team, follow us on our Facebook Page.
  • If you dig on our style, the things we say and the way that we say them, and you want more of that energy, join our Facebook Fan Group.

But maybe being a fan isn’t enough for you. Maybe you want to SUPPORT us. There are number of ways to help bring us closer to being able to do this full-time.

  • For those of you that prefer a hands-on reading experience, that love the smell of paper and the feel of a book’s spine, we’ve collected the first volume of Hunter Black, “Betrayer’s Blood,” into a trade paperback, currently available for purchase on Amazon.
  • For those of you more interested in Hunter Black merchandise, we offer an array of designs on a variety of products at Raygun Tea Party, our TeePublic storefront. We offer more than Hunter Black geek as well, we occasionally throw up whatever geeky thing we decide to design.

But making purchases isn’t the BEST way to support us.

Becoming a Patron is hands down the best way to support your favorite hard-boiled fantasy webcomic. Will and I are actually in the process of retooling our Patron rewards, but even the old stuff is still pretty good:

  • If you contribute $2/month, we’ll occasionally drop a cool piece of digital artwork your way.
  • For $5/month, you’ll get early access to comics pages. Every Sunday, we’ll send you a PDF of the three pages coming out that upcoming week. Just last week, we started adding a commentary of the week’s pages as well. Plus, you get whatever cool stuff we send to the $2 backers.
  • For $10/month, you’ll get everything from the earlier brackets plus we’ll send you a copy of the trade paperback, along with copies of the otherwise con exclusive floppies that we print for each chapter of the comic.

We’re thinking of adjusting our rewards, though. We’re planning to add a reward for EVERY backer…any time someone hits $50 total contributed to the Hunter Black cause, Will will do a commission just for them. We’re also planning a monthly livestream of Will working on a particularly non-spoilery page. (We’re also open to suggestions in the regard…what could you offer that would make you want to become a Patron?)

Finally, maybe you dig the Hunter Black creative team! Justin (me) writes, Will draws, and Jacob letters/keeps us afloat. All of us do other freelance work, and maybe you want a taste of that!

Okay, I feel like this is more than enough to get you started. Read the comic! Become a Patron! Follow us on social media! Read the comic again!
