Zezem the Cruel, for those of you who don’t remember, started off as a creation of Will’s. He was originally going to be a villain — as an undead Mesopotamian priest — in a project called Dash Steel. We actually did an 8-page short for Dash Steel and entered into the Zuda Comics contest from, like, 15 years ago. I wanted him to wield a mace the head of which was in the shape of a roaring lion with a flaming mane.
After we only squeaked out a second place finish (which was for the best because we weren’t ready), it looked like Zezem was going to end up in the round file. Then, we needed a necromancer for Hunter Black…and the rest, as they say, is history.
